| Former RAF Charmy Down is situated just off of the A46 near Bath. Today the runways appear to have gone, however, the resident farmer informed me that they have been grassed over and are sometimes visible. The Control Tower is in reasonably good condition having been occupied by displaced persons for several years following the war. There have been attempts by both the current owner and Severnside Aviation Society to acquire planning permission to restore the Control Tower, however, as is often the case, these proposals were shot down in flames by the local authority. More recently a number of travellers have illegally occupied a site close to the Control Tower and thus far the local authority have been powerless to remove them, with the law seemingly on the the travellers side. The remains of the airfield are also vulnerable from another park & ride scheme (there are two already in Bath) that has been propsed by the local authority. Clearly there are different laws for different people in this country! The only aircraft activity seen today at Charmy Down are microlights and scale model aircraft. |
