Over the years many pilots have been killed on Salisbury Plain, although this memorial, which today stands on a traffic island close to Larkhill and Rollestone, probably marks the location of one of the first military aircraft crash sites in the United Kingdom. The incident occurred during the summer of 1912 and is believed to have been caused as a result of the aircraft stalling whilst flying into a strong, gusting headwind. Both occupants of the aircraft, Captain B. Lorrainne and Sergeant R. Wilson, were killed during the incident.
