This memorial was erected by the people of Wincanton to mark the crash location and commemorate the crew of B-17G Flying Fortress "Old Faithful", which was severely damaged by enemy anti-aircraft fire whilst on a diversionary bombing raid on 25th June 1944. The raid drew away enemy fire from other B17’s, which were dropping supplies to the French Resistance on an airfield near Toulouse. The aircraft was from the 401st Bomber Squadron, 91st Bomb Group based at Bassingbourn in Cambridgeshire.
